Once was a nation, built on a foundation
Of science, rationale and logic
Inventors, creators and comedy makers
And playwrights so philosophic

Such bright mathematicians, and learned politicians
But warriors led the way
Enabled by war, aspirations set soar
Democracy prevailed in that day

Archimedes, Pythagoras, Alexander the Great
Till this day, their legacy lives on
Socrates, Plato and Helen of Troy
And others whose names are anon

Gave the world democracy and the Olympic Games
The first people to discover the World’s round
No less an achievement, at least on a par
But somehow not commonly renowned

Trojans and Spartans fought many great wars
Phidippides ran the first Marathon
Homer wrote Iliad and Odyssey
Athenians worshipped at the Parthenon

At the Olympic games, a truce was declared
For Javelin and Discus, the athletes prepared
Sprinting and Long Jump were among the events
Clothing was minimal but no modesty prevents

Now the circle has turned, Rome has long burned
The Olympics have returned to their spiritual abode
Athletes from all nations with great expectations
Olive wreaths and Medals on the winners bestowed
